Getting Organized

ADDING MY VIDEOS TO THIS BLOG

I have heard from several people that they would like to see some of the educational videos I have created.  I realize there was a pull down menu at the top of my blog for it, but I never actually organized the content I have created in the past.

In the past 6 months I have had to wipe both my Mac and my Windows machine (long stories), so some of my videos are now “lost’, but luckily YouTube still has a small collection.

I finally got organized today and separated my videos into categories.  If you look along the top of my blog, you will see a category called “Animations/Videos” :



Most of my videos fall in to four categories of  “How-To” videos, “Educational Teaching Videos”, “Flash Animated Tutorials”, and “Livescribe pencasts”.  I will be adding some Animationish videos after this Fall when I have my students creating some.

I created the “How-To” videos to teach others how to use software or hardware.  Here are the categories I have in that section:

I plan on adding more videos to this section in the near future, so some of the categories do not have any links yet.

The next main category I have been creating videos for is in “Educational Teaching Videos”.  These are short videos I have created for my students to introduce a topic we are studying in the class.

As you can see when you look through the Educational Teaching videos, I was trying out several types of hardware/software to see what worked best.   I used the eInstruction Workspace software for a “whiteboard” in some videos, and recorded and edited with Camtasia studio.  In other videos I used a Lumens HD Ladibug document camera.  I found the document camera to be better for me when I am actually needing to record working with actual objects like base ten blocks and fraction circles.   I will hopefully be making more videos using these this semester. I will try to keep up with posting them here so I don’t lose them again!!

Most of the tutorials/lessons I have created for my students in the past year are Livescribe pencasts, but I find when I need the lesson to be more visual, a video is better.    My livescribe pencasts are organized by topic on THIS PAGE.  I have quite a few pencasts collected there.   When I had to wipe my computers, I lost all the original pencasts, so for now I cannot change any of those pencasts into PDF’s to download.

Lastly, about six years ago I started created Flash animated tutorials to help my students in my Math For Elementary Teachers classes better visualize the math they will be teaching. I strongly believe visualization is key to understanding!

The Flash animated tutorials are housed on a separate area (outside of my blog).   They are organized by arithmetic topic:

For example, clicking on the “1/3” would take you to the fraction tutorials, and the “2” will take you to the multidigit whole number operations.  This type of tutorial takes me a lot longer to create, so I do not have many in some areas (like decimals).   Instead, I am starting to create more interactive tutorials using Hyperstudio.  To see a few of those interactive tutorials, CLICK HERE.

Presenting….my syllabus!

I have been spending the past few weeks trying to think of better ways to get my future teachers to be more engaged in their learning. I have decided to model several ideas after a great friend of mine who writes the amazing Teaching College Math blog, Maria Andersen.

Not only am I going to use hands on manipulatives and technology (like I have been) to teach with, but to help my students organize their thoughts and the material for the course, I am going to have them create a Prezi, a Wiki, a Blog and a Mindmap. One fourth of the class will be doing each of these for every test. Each student will rotate through the 4 types of online tools for every test (but not in the same order as the rest of their group). All students will also create a google website to house links to all of their creations and any notes or other information they want to add, along with their service learning journal. The website will be private and they will only share viewing privileges with me. The other 4 online components will be public and shared with the rest of the class.

I am hoping that not only will they have a better feel for the material in each quarter of the course, but it will be theirs to keep online and reuse the ideas and links when they become teachers. It will be helpful for them to study for each test because all 4 types of models will be created by the class for each test, and they will be able to use one another’s to help them study.

I decided I would model some of the types for the students, by creating my syllabus as a Prezi, and also in a mindmap format. (I will write a new blog entry when I finish my mindmapped syllabus).

I thought it would not be as helpful to show them the syllabus in Blog format (they can see this blog for ideas), and my syllabus is already on a website (just not a free google one). I am still contemplating whether to show an example of my syllabus as a wiki.

Teaching with Manipulatives on the Web!

Over the past few weeks I have used my Lumens HD 265 Ladibug document camera several times to show hands on materials (manipulatives) and activities online!

Here are a couple of examples of how I used it online:

Ex 1)    I taught an online session on how I teach with technology in my classroom.  One of the examples I used was to have all my students using fraction pieces while I taught with them from the front of the room.

So the students can see what I am doing with the pieces, the Ladibug document camera can show my hands moving the pieces live during class, projected onto the screen. (These still images and the video below were all taken by the Lumens DC265 Ladibug!!)

To demonstrate this to the participants online, I was able to share my desktop in the session, and show the document camera’s live feed running on my computer screen!

I was even able to toggle back and forth between the Ladibug document camera’s view, and the other programs I was running on my computer to teach the session!

Not only can you show what you are holding and teaching with live through the camera, but the Ladibug HD 265 also records video and audio!  Here is the same lesson above, but the video version, which I can now post online for students to see.

Ex 2) I was creating a video for my students on how to use the graphing calculator.   I no longer need to capture the screen of the calculator using  special software!

I can show them which buttons to hit and the screen, all at the same time!

I can even zoom in on the screen so they can see a graph more clearly:

All of this can be done live during class, or I can record the calculator lesson directly from the Ladibug camera and then post the lesson to my website!

Above you can see the menu that “floats” on my desktop when I am using the document camera, making it very easy to switch to any other program or back to the document camera, also allowing me to zoom, take still images and video with the camera!

I can’t wait to teach my Math For Elementary Teacher’s class in a few weeks!  No more overhead projector, no more graphing calculator overhead…just the document camera to show all the manipulatives and the calculator both as I teach, and as online lessons for outside of class!

 

My Calendar is growing!

Just a quick update to share how excited I am at all the invites I am getting to present, give hands-on workshops, and also to train on the technology I am using to teach my math classes!

I added my speaking/teaching/training events to a calendar on the right side of the page.  Check it out!

Just today I  set the date with the administration of my college to train them on how to use the Livescribe Pulse smartpen!  I better get some of the pens that just arrived ready to use!

 

My next technology journey!

I have been having several interesting conversations with Roger Wagner, the creator of HyperStudio, lately about teaching with technology.   He passed on some great teaching ideas!      It would be really fun to use my Lumens DC265 document camera and HyperStudio 5 to create a stop-action movie!   I could also record a “normal” movie and insert it into a HyperStudio stack to be part of a larger project for my students….the wheels are turning!   I sure wish there were more than 24 hours in a day!

Recording with a Lumens document camera

I just got a Lumens DC265 Ladibug  document camera to try out!   I created a couple of videos for my students using it.  It is amazing!

I am finding it much easier to embed the videos straight from YouTube, rather than trying to change the format of every tool I have to work well with Dreamweaver and other website software I use.
