My Activities at ISTE 2010 in Denver

I had a great time at ISTE!  This is the first time I have ever been to a conference and stayed in the vendor area the entire time!

I worked with several companies while I was there.   Every day I spent some time in the eInstruction booth showing folks how I use the Mobi, CPS Pulse student response clickers, ExamView and Workspace in my own classes.   That was very exciting!  I was so busy that I didn’t get any photos of their booth!

I also presented with Jim Marggraff, CEO and founder of the Livescribe Pulse smartpen at a breakfast on Tuesday morning.   It was amazing to meet the man who invented the Leap Pad and the Livescribe Pulse smartpen!  I presented the next day at their poster session as well.

I spent a lot of time in the FableVision Learning booth as well, with my friends Peter and Paul Reynolds and the FableVision Learning staff!   I finally got to meet Peggy Healy Sterns, who created Stationary Studio and The Graph Club (Tom Snyder Productions).  She is currently working on a new project called fab@school with FableVision and Mackiev Software (and other great folks).  Photos and more information about this project if you click on the photo above!

Getting ready for ISTE 2010 in Denver!

Over the next few weeks I will posting about some Educational Technology companies I will be presenting for, and working with, at ISTE 2010 in Denver.

Today I had a chat with some colleagues at eInstruction about my role for them at ISTE.  I was selected to be one of the original cadre of National Certified Instructors for eInstruction, and recently underwent a fantastic 3-day training event in Maryland!   I met some amazing teachers there, and learned more about several educational (and inspirational) products that I am very excited to share with other teachers at ISTE!

I will be working in one of eInstruction’s  “sharing stations” (my terminology, not eInstruction’s)  helping teachers form ideas on how to use the Mobi, the CPS Pulse clickers and Interwrite Workspace, to enhance any classroom activity or lesson.

The Interwrite Workspace software is the “heart” of the collaboration between the Mobi and the Clickers in an interative classroom experience.    This software allows the teacher to present their lesson using any software on their computer or website, and then have students participate with the activity or lesson with both Mobis and CPS Pulse Clickers for immediate feedback.   The Mobi also allows the teacher to walk around the room and engage with their students on a more personal and interactive level.

The CPS Pulse clickers work seemlessly to send immediate feedback to the LCD screen on the Mobi, and allows the students to input anything from letters and numbers, to math symbols!

CPS Pulse clickers and Workspace – great for immediate feedback!

I spent some time today playing with my eInstruction CPS Pulse (clickers) and the Mobi software called Workspace.   I wanted to create a short “how to” video on getting immediate feedback from your students while teaching a class.    One of the best features is that you don’t have to design the questions ahead of time!  In this video I will show you how to ask any question during class, get immediate feedback of your class as a whole, and then be able to look at more detailed feedback from individual students  at a later time.  You can do this at any point during the class, even when the students are asking questions about the homework!

Maricopa Tech 2010 conference

I had the pleasure of spending yesterday with my colleagues from the Maricopa Community College District at our annual technology conference.   I gave a presentation with another math instructor on how to incorporate technology into our Hybrid courses to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics.   Donna’s introduced the presentation by describing Hybrid models, and gave details on the model she uses at SCC. She then introduced the Livescribe Pulse smartpen, and showed some sample online lessons she has created for her students.

When it was my turn, my main focus was on using technology both during in-class instruction and outside of class to help the students.   I also included theLivescribe Pulse smartpen in my part of the presentation, along with the  eInstruction Mobi and Workspace software.

I sat at a table with many of my tech friends.  As we looked around we realized we probably had more tech toys at our table than the rest of the room put together!  One of them took a pic of SOME of the toys we had:

The really funny thing was there were more cell phones in the pile than people at the table!     I’m looking forward to hanging out with my tech friends and colleauges again soon!

I recorded this as part of the interview process for becoming a Certified National Instructor for eInstructor.  I was accepted into the program and the training is in MD next week!  I can’t wait to learn even more about all their products and how to use them to enhance my own classroom and online experiences for my students!

 

Using InterwriteWorkspace to record a lesson

I wanted to show my students a comparison of graphing a line to graphing a parabola.  I quickly made a video using a Mobi and the Interwrite Workspace, both by eInstruction.  The Interwrite Workspace allowed me to write on graph paper (using the pen on the Mobi) and to record everything I was writing and saying with their “record” tool!    Not only was it a great introduction, but now that it is posted on the web, my students can go back and review it anytime they need to.

InterwriteWorkspace and YouTube

Today I derived the Quadratic Formula for my students in class.  I promised them I would do some sort of pencast later and post it, so I told them not to take notes on it.

I ended up using my eInstruction Mobi and pen to write on the Interwrite Workspace software.   Interwrite Workspace is also from eInstruction, and it has a built-in tool to record video and audio!  It worked really well! I love the fact you can see color and also my mouse movement, in case I want to refer back to something I already wrote.

The software saves the video as a .avi file, and so I uploaded it quickly to YouTube so my student could access it easily.  I also posted a link to the video on my website.

I am really enjoying having a variety of tools available to use to record part of a lesson or to write examples that I want my students to view again later when they are working on their homework.

 

First Day of (real) Student Participation!

Today I brought a couple of Mobis with me to class!

I always give the students problems to do throughout the class, but instead of me writing out the solutions,  I had students volunteer to write them on the Mobis!
(yes, I got their written permission to post their photos)

It was such a fun experience for them, and for me!   They really got a good laugh trying to learn to write on the Mobi, while looking at the board, but you can see they did really well!

I am hoping to get at least one more Mobi so I can do some group work, having each group post their solutions.

They wrote on the board better than I did! 🙂

I recently got a set of CPS Clickers and have been learning how to use them on my own (while I wait until I have formal training next week).   My students know I have the clickers and ask me every day if they get to use them!  Hopefully soon!   They have been very easy to set up and play with!    I might just take a stab at using them in my classes before the training!

I am charging 2 more Mobis today to try out in class tomorrow.   Should have gotten the 3-pack charger!  oh well  :  }    I am excited to try out the feature in the eInstruction Interwrite Workspace software where you can split up the workspace into sections for each Mobi to write in.

This will be perfect for group work!  I can hand each group a Mobi and have them solve the same problem and post their solutions.   Every group will have a chance to see how the other groups approached it – all at the same time!   VERY exciting technology!   I can’t wait to see how it transforms my classroom tomorrow!!
